Japanese Novel Becomes Musical: Toritsukare Otoko
The Japanese novel "Toritsukare Otoko" (The Obsessed Man) by Shinji Ishii is about to experience a cinematic birth. Bandai Namco Filmworks has announced the production of an animated musical film based on this beloved story, with a planned release for fall 2025 in Japan.
Wataru Takahashi (known for his work on the Crayon Shin-chan films) will direct the film; Naoyuki Miura (co-writer of "Summer Film ni Notte") will be in charge of the script, and Masatsugu Arakawa ("Windy Tales", "Medabots Spirit") will lead character design.
"Toritsukare Otoko" narrates the story of Giuseppe, a man with a peculiarity: he temporarily becomes obsessed with different things, dedicating all his attention to them regardless of anything else. His life takes a new turn when he sees Pechka, a balloon vendor who seems to carry deep sadness. Driven by the desire to help her, Giuseppe, along with his faithful mouse companion Cielo, uses the skills and knowledge acquired during his past obsessions to solve the problems that plague Pechka, seeking to get closer to her.
The story explores themes such as obsession, love at first sight, friendship, and the ability to find solutions in unexpected places.
Bandai Namco Filmworks has already launched an official website with a *teaser trailer* and a promotional image offering a first visual impression of the project.
While no specific date has been set, it is expected to be announced later this year. Bandai Namco Filmworks suggests a possible subsequent international release, although details have not yet been provided. With the creative team involved and the moving premise, "Toritsukare Otoko" promises to be a standout musical film with wondrous animation.
