The Novel "It's Not Me in Flames" Gets Manga Adaptation, Along with a Movie in September
The popular novel "Ore de wa Nai Enjō" (It's Not Me in Flames) by author Akinari Asakura is preparing for a new adaptation, this time in manga format. It has been announced that artist Ōtori556 (Kokoro) will be responsible for bringing the story to the printed pages, and its debut is scheduled for July 15th in Futabasha’s Manga Action magazine.
A Man Accused and on the Run
"Ore de wa Nai Enjō" tells the story of Taisuke Yamagata, a sales manager falsely accused of murdering a university student. After being publicly exposed and transformed into Japan’s number one enemy, Yamagata is forced to flee to prove his innocence. As he progresses in his search for the truth, he discovers shocking secrets that involve him in a conspiracy far greater than he ever imagined. The original novel, published in 2022 by Futabasha, has captivated readers with its plot full of unexpected twists and a fast-paced rhythm.
A Film on the Horizon
The manga adaptation is not the only novelty related to "Ore de wa Nai Enjō." The success of the novel has also driven a live-action adaptation scheduled for release in Japan on September 26th. The film is expected to maintain the tension and key psychological elements of the original story, thus attracting an even wider audience. This double adaptation (manga and film) demonstrates the great potential of the novel and its ability to generate interest across various media.
Akinari Asakura: An Author with Many Projects
Akinari Asakura is known not only for "Ore de wa Nai Enjō" and "Rokunin no Usotsuki na Daigakusei," but also for his collaboration with the renowned artist Takeshi Obata on the manga “Show-ha Shoten!”. This latter, which appears in Jump SQ. magazine, features a distinctive artistic style courtesy of Obata and is scheduled to conclude with its eleventh volume, to be published on September 4th. The availability of this latest work in English through Viz Media and MANGA Plus underscores the author’s growing international popularity.
A Successful Precedent with Previous Adaptations
Taking advantage of this moment, it is important to remember Asakura's previous success with his novel "Rokunin no Usotsuki na Daigakusei" (Six Lying College Students: Plus One). This work was also adapted into a manga by Keiga Ōsawa, which was published in Young Ace between June 2022 and November of the same year. In addition, it features a live-action adaptation that premiered in Japan on November 22nd.
